Ghosts’ Tour to Burgos

On 26 May 2026, eighteen Keble Football Ghosts travelled to Burgos in northern Spain for the first international tour in the group's 57-year history. Bringing together former Keble players spanning five decades, from Oxford Blues and former captains to members of the 2024 Cuppers-winning side, the tour celebrated not only football but the enduring friendships, camaraderie and shared identity that continue long after graduation.
The Ghosts, Keble's alumni football group, have been bringing together former players since 1969 for one-off matches each year [see ‘From Field to Formal Hall’ in this issue]. This latest adventure, conceived by Felix Álvarez-Garmón (1993 Social Studies), established what all involved hope will become a regular feature of the Ghosts calendar and a lasting link with the University of Burgos.
The four-day action-packed tour began with a warm welcome from representatives of the University of Burgos at their campus in the inspiring 12th-century Hospital del Rey. The following morning, in temperatures soaring above 30°C and on a pitch that Keble's long-serving groundsman, Ade, would have been proud of, the Ghosts lined up against a team comprising students, alumni and staff of the University of Burgos.
Keble's starting eleven quickly stepped on the gas and played some sharp football to establish a 2–0 lead within the opening twenty minutes. Nigel Owen (1995 Economics and Management) converted a penalty before Fin Hayes (2022 English Language and Literature) doubled the advantage following a clinical counter-attacking move. After the first water break, and with several changes to the outfield line-up, the Ghosts struggled to maintain their early momentum. Burgos responded strongly, scoring twice in quick succession before taking a 3–2 lead shortly before half-time.
The interval team talk restored belief and energy. In a highly competitive second half, the lead swung back and forth and goals from former Blues captain Noah Fletcher (2022 Economics and Management) and a second from Fin Hayes brought the scores level at 4–4. With ten minutes remaining, Noah then produced a superb left-footed strike to restore the Ghosts' lead at 5–4. A determined defensive effort saw Keble withstand sustained pressure from a fired-up Burgos side to secure a memorable victory.
All players can be proud of their performances, but special mention should go to Jonathan Chen (2019), whose outstanding display in both midfield and defence earned him man-of-the-match honours.
Following such a hard-fought and good-spirited contest, players from both sides gathered afterwards over tortillas and beer. Several Ghosts also met with students from the University of Burgos later that evening to share their experiences of life at Keble and Oxford, an exchange that was greatly appreciated by their hosts.
Away from the football, many Ghosts visited Burgos Cathedral, the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of Santa María and final resting place of the legendary Spanish hero El Cid. Others explored the city's plazas, cafés and historic streets. A celebratory five-course lunch featured excellent Ribera del Duero wines from Felix's own vineyard before the group attended Burgos CF's final match of the season against Andorra at the 12,000-capacity El Plantío Stadium. Although Burgos secured a 1–0 victory, other results failed to go their way, and they narrowly missed the play-off places on goal difference.
The tour concluded with a visit to Finca Torremilanos in Aranda de Duero for a wine-tasting experience and vineyard tour. There, the Ghosts learned that they were only the second football squad to visit the estate, following Real Madrid's visit in January 2024.
More important than the result, however, was the opportunity to bring together Keble footballers from across five decades, united by a shared affection for the College, the Ghosts and the game. The biggest winners were camaraderie, conviviality, team spirit and that distinctive sense of "Keble-ness" that remains long after players have left Oxford. If Burgos is any guide, international Ghosts tours look set to become a valued part of Keble football life for many years to come.
