Student Life in Brief…

Women’s Football Success

Keble women’s football had another fantastic season, reaching the Cuppers final undefeated, and claiming the crown for the third year in a row. Hertble, the Keble and Hertford combined squad, clashed with Wertonfield (Wadham-Mansfield-Merton) for the title on Saturday 21 February. With a score of 1-1 at the 90-minute mark, Hertble won the game after a tense penalty shootout.

STEM for Britain Finalist

Eleanor Warrington (2021 DPhil Engineering Science) was selected as a finalist for the STEM for BRITAIN 2026 poster competition, organised by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. The exhibition aims to give members of both Houses of Parliament an insight into the outstanding research work being undertaken by early-career research scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians. Pictured here with the Labour MP for Oxford East, Anneliese Dodds, Eleanor presented her poster on ‘Real time gas detection using optical fibre the width of a human hair’.

Rugby Blues

Three Keble students were in the triumphant Dark Blue squad at this year’s Rugby Varsity matches, which took place on 28 February. Sam Cunningham (2025 PGCE Mathematics) and Matilda Lees (2022 MSci Engineering Sciences) were starting and replacement wingers for the Men’s and Women’s teams respectively, while Joel Anjorin (2020 Medicine) was a Men’s replacement prop. The women retained their trophy, winning handsomely 52-8, and the men then followed the trend of the day, putting in a physically dominant display, winning 37-25.

Clothes Swap

For Week 6’s Green Action Week, the JCR organised a multi-college-wide clothes swap, run jointly with Oxfam, to help avoid textile waste. JCR Environment and Ethics Officer, Hannah Poultney (2024 Geography), writes: “Our clothes swap during Green Action Week was a great success. There was a steady stream of people throughout the day, who donated over 120 items of clothing and helped to divert textiles from landfill. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved and supporting reuse. Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make it happen!”

Arts Festival

Hilary term saw the return of the Keble Arts Festival, running from 22 to 28 February. Headed by the JCR Arts & Pubs Officers, Ariana Garcha (2024 History and Politics) and Matthew Kemball (2024 Theology and Religion), the week brought many creative events to the College community, including lino printing, dance workshop, jazz concert, library exhibition and the annual launch of the fig, an art magazine created by our students.
