OUBEP at the HBAC

Oxford University Business Economics Programme delegates at The H B Allen Centre.

Nick Putnam (1975 Chemistry) writes:

Oxford University Business Economics Programme has a new venue in The H B Allen Centre at Keble for its summer residential flagship programme.

OUBEP was originally set up over 70 years ago as a partnership between Oxford’s Economics faculty, Government and business. The period after the Second World War was a time of immense economic, social and political upheaval. Sound familiar? So it was decided to provide advanced economics education for the future leaders of the sponsoring organisations. The precise nature of the challenges facing leaders today may have changed but the demand for understanding and shared ideas is still with us.

The programme continues to be run at Oxford with a curriculum devised and taught by the Department of Economics. After many years housed in central Oxford, at various colleges, it became clear the participants needed more advanced facilities and so the programme moved to modern facilities at Egrove Park, on the outskirts of town. With further changes to the style of the residential part of the programme, a new home was sought and the outstanding facilities at Keble’s new HB Allen Centre are perfect. The programme has therefore made a welcome return to central Oxford. Because of changes to the structure of the programme, there is now only a week in residence, which makes it all the more important to be based back in the city. There is a richer Oxford experience.

Keble provides a perfect venue. The curriculum relies on lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers and the shared experience of peers on the programme. Keble’s facilities are ideal for all of these, with the various spaces available offering a wonderful environment for learning. The team running the Centre are welcoming and helpful, always on hand to meet the needs of the participants. Of course, the residential accommodation is top notch; comfortable and convenient with delicious catering typical of Keble.

Having recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of the programme, it’s great to see it continuing to thrive; it’s the best we have known it and we’re very happy to have this partnership with Keble.
