‘Girl Like That’ | Lucy Peer
Passionate about both science and music, Keble student Lucy Peer (2021 MChem Chemistry) channels her creativity as the singer-songwriter for up-and-coming band ‘Girl Like That’ (debut album ‘Medicine Box’). We caught up with her to hear more about the band, her inspirations and performing at Truck Festival over the summer.
When was ‘Girl Like That’ born and how did the band come about?
GLT was only born at the start of this year but a lot of work went into it before it was ‘officially’ born. Naming the band was the hardest job of them all…we probably went through 200/300 names before settling on it. It’s ironic as half the band aren’t exactly ‘girls like that’ but I think that adds to it.
A fun fact about how we formed: Arun (our youngest member) was sharked…musically! I first met Arun when I was running a stall at Freshers’ Fair last year and a week later he was playing a gig with me.
As for the rest of the band, I’ve played with them for a long time and known them for much longer. I’m very lucky as they are some of the best people I know.
Who have been your inspirations in your music?
If you ask everyone in the band, we’d all have a different answer but for me…where do I even start?
Matchbox Twenty, Nothing But Thieves, The Pretty Reckless. Icons such as Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne…but I also love current artists. While they may be a different genre, Holly Humberstone and Olivia Dean write incredible music (their albums got me through finals!).
I always say my music is for fans of Nothing But Thieves, Olivia Rodrigo and Paramore.
How have you found balancing your studies at Keble with being a singer-songwriter?
I haven’t…but, in all seriousness, music is a huge form of relaxation for me. It has been so lovely to have this creative outlet and while there has definitely been a lot on my plate, I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Plus, musicians know how to party!!
We hear you had a busy summer performing. Can you tell us some more about that and how you found it?
This summer has been a dream. We have ticked off huge bucket list items, met some incredible people and got to watch amazing music.
The band and I have been on such an adventure and hopefully we get to do it again next year.
We will never forget our first festival performance at Truck Festival. Even though we were one of the first bands performing, we still had an incredible time, and hopefully everyone watching us enjoyed it as much as we did!
