Lucy Donovan (2015 DPhil Cardiovascular Science), writes:

I am honoured to be a recipient of one of the Griffiths Awards in 2022/23 which has provided funding for a study trip to Australia. At the end of November, I travelled to Perth to attend the APSA-ASCEPT (Australasian Pharmaceutical Science Association and Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists) 2022 Joint Conference where I had been selected to give both oral and poster presentations.

I am a final year DPhil Cardiovascular Science student funded by the British Heart Foundation, and it was a privilege to share my research with an international audience, especially as I was unable to attend in-person conferences throughout most of my DPhil due to the pandemic. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss my work with other researchers, as well as hear about the interesting research being undertaken around the world.

It was a privilege to share my research with an international audience especially as I was unable to attend in-person conferences throughout most of my DPhil due to the pandemic.

After the conference, I travelled to the east coast to visit a lab based at the Hunter Medical Research Institute in Newcastle, New South Wales. This research group have recently started collaborating with my lab in Oxford and it was great to meet them in person and have a tour of their department.

There is a potential opportunity for me to join this lab as a post-doctoral researcher after my DPhil, if we are successful in securing funding, so this trip provided an invaluable opportunity to discuss the science and logistics in person.

This was my first time visiting Australia; it is a trip that I will remember forever and has given me motivation as I start to write up my thesis. I had time to visit some of the famous sites alongside the conference and lab visit, with Rottnest Island and Sydney Harbour being particularly memorable! I would like to express my deepest gratitude to The Keble Association and the Committee for granting me one of the Griffiths Awards to give me this once in a lifetime opportunity.
